CONTEXT

A living set of tools, guidelines and templates

OMNI is a living set of tools, guidelines, and templates that helps diverse teams build on-brand, consistent, and scalable UI across platforms. It was built incrementally from actual products we released, growing in capability and coverage through every product practice and the learnings accumulated over the years.

DESIGN LEADERSHIP

Building and governing the system

I led the design system across its full journey — from the foundations we launched with the VIVE Reality System on VIVE Cosmos, through its spatial-architecture evolutions, and out to the brand extensions for VIVERSE and VIVE Eagle AI Glasses. I owned the decisions on cross-platform architecture, team governance, and adoption across organizations.

KEY DESIGN DECISIONS

The evolution of the design system

Spatial UI and interaction architecture

The spatial UI and interaction architecture grew more complex as we rolled out new features across VIVE products. We scaled the system from PCVR to AIO devices and evolved it into a distance-based interaction model — formalizing how users interact based on a panel's distance and interaction zone. Alongside those architecture changes, we revised the UI layers and components to improve usability for multimodal interactions across VR and MR.

Platform branches and design tokens

The system was built to serve product design across platforms simultaneously. We established unified master primitives and continuously optimized components for each device platform. I directed a cross-organization restructure to integrate product variants and brand configuration, so the consumer and enterprise branches could be extended as custom themes — systematically, through one shared library and design tokens.

Design commission and handoff

Collaborating with many engineers and product partners across platforms in parallel was impossible to sustain by managing one team's resources alone. As the core design-system team, I focused on making handoff efficient — streamlining workflow, content, and communication. We established a design-commission process to aggregate demands across product groups, and published a full release-notes section for every major version.

OUTCOME

Unifying the brand design system

OMNI provided the foundational UI patterns for every product and platform we built over the years, and its structured architecture supported both design and development at scale. The hardest part of design-system leadership wasn't building it — it was sustaining it, evolving it from everything we learned across products. What we established outlasts any single product or team.
