CONTEXT
Designing a universal platform through transformation
HTC unveiled VIVERSE in 2022 while we were deep in unifying its frameworks and toolchain. We envisioned a broader open spatial ecosystem and continually evolved the strategy — transitioning core products components into a universal, browser-based infrastructure to grow the creator and developer economy.
DESIGN LEADERSHIP
Platform UX strategy and unified team delivery
I led UX strategy for VIVERSE across its full development arc. As the business and product positioning shifted through each cycle, the hardest design challenge was holding design integrity across fragmented features. I directed a unified virtual design team that spanned organizations, set the design roadmap across products, oversaw the experiences, and adjusted priorities to support each operational rollout. I carried the UX philosophy from VIVE Reality System into VIVERSE and established a brand design system to deliver one coherent spatial experience.
KEY DESIGN DECISIONS
Platform coherence across fragmented functions
Interoperability — the user transition system
On a hardware-agnostic platform, interoperable user transitions were one of the core architectural challenges. We envisioned the platform as interconnected virtual universes spanning WebXR and native VR content, where users move from one destination to the next seamlessly. I built the concept of users as travelers in the universe, and we designed a portal that carried brand recognition and served as the gateway to the next journey. The concept was implemented as a framework and abstracted the technical complexity to create a sense of continuity across transitions.

VIVERSE Home — the platform anchor
VIVERSE was built primarily on the browser-based infrastructure, and the engineering constraints between systems shaped the immersive 3D spatial experience across every device entry point. I prioritized social and collaboration features and implemented the interoperability portal with deep integration into VIVE products. Through the platform’s strategy shifts, my UX decisions defined the foundations of the platform and evolved Home into the hub for the browser-based spatial experience.

Unifying the design system across web and mobile
VIVERSE spanned a suite of interconnected products, and the inconsistent design language across them confused users and weakened the brand. I led the team to restructure the product portals and revamp the official VIVERSE homepage, and established a brand design system with component libraries for both WebXR and mobile.

OUTCOME
Coherence under uncertainty
The brand design system we built refreshed product design across the ecosystem and improved experience consistency. The platform infrastructure and user transition model established universal design protocols between design and development, making cross-platform coherence possible across implementations. Leading VIVERSE design across organizations, we delivered a coherent cross-product experience despite constant shifts in engineering and business priorities.
